Fairy tales play a crucial role in our lives. When we were kids (even as adults), they taught us how to face our problems and overcome them. They teach us to have the courage to stand up for what’s right and defeat the “villain” in our lives. Not only do fairy tales teach us important life lessons, but they also enable us to use our vivid imaginations, to dive into a story and to enter a new world of hope, excitement, and enchantment. What surprised me most about this course is how much of an influence fairy tales have on our lives and how differently each story can be interpreted to suit the individual’s needs and desires. What interested my most about this topic was reading all of the different fairy tales and seeing how drastically different they were to the Disney versions we all know and love. I also was very interested in interpreting each tale and discussing the darker, deeper meanings behind them. Lastly, I loved when we got the freedom to write our own stories because I was able to really tap into my creative side and have fun with words. The one thing we missed was reading all of the fairy tales out of the textbook. I was so into the course and reading the tales, but we didn’t have time to read all of them, unfortunately. This course really allowed me to dive back into my childhood and taught me how to use my imagination again– something we all lose once we hit middle school.
